I know there are a lot of similarities, they are both arts of submission and both branched off from Judo, but what are some of their differences?

  1. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's Mantra is "Position before Submission," which while Sambo uses, but not to the same extent- hence why Sambo practitioners are much more apt at locking in submissions instantly and tend to be very good at the scramble, while BJJ users tend to be better at breaking down their opponent.

The disadvantage for Sport Sambo is that they don't focus on chokes at all, and aren't nearly as capable on their backs and the advantage is that Sambo brings out the full potential of leg locks, and IMHO, does a better job of teaching takedowns to it's students.

What ends up happening is that Sambo and BJJ practitioners end up having strengths in different areas... and honestly, crosstraining isn't the worst of ideas for people in both arts.

  2. Sambo is submission wrestling and judo is submission throws and slams both are branches from jujitsu actually first of its kind creeated from 15th century samurai

  3. The people who created Sambo out of Judo focused more on utilizing take downs in order to ground and pound an opponent rather then utilizing submissions which is why their ground skills arent as effective as they are in jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu founder chose to focus more on the fight once it hits the floor which is why JJ fighters takedown techniques are inferior to Sambos.  Bottom line is that Sambo is a hybrid style incorporating striking and grappling and JJ is a specialized style focusing on grappling alone

  4. Grappling wise, sambo guys are more proficient at straight wrestling. While their submissions run the whole gamut, they include leg locks, something that is by and large missing in BJJ.
