well, obviously - it means they're promising you something.

usually, in most cases, it's like an engagement engagement ring.

they're promising that they're planning on getting engaged,

or being with you forever.

It's a promise to be faithful to the woman (usually-could be for the guy I guess).

It's kinda like a step down from an engagement ring, except, not promising marriage.

A promise ring is exchanged between young couples who want to pledge their love for each other, but without the formality of an engagement ring.  An engagement ring is a promise to wed; a promise ring is a promise to love.  It's sort of a prelude.  It's usually for couple who are too young to consider marriage yet.

I got a promise ring on my boyfriend and my 1st year anni. It means, "i'll promise to love you forever and treat as my one and only special person." It's a promise to honor and love that person.

Give it when you really feel like you can honor and devote your self to that other person. It's almost like a commitment ring, but not a marriage ring. It's not that serious.

It's a nice gesture.
