i dot understand the i love but theee bit,, so is it love or not?

  1. I think in this passage of Shakespeare's, the phrase "but thee" means "only thee."

    So the quote is saying

    I love thee, I love [only[ thee

    With a love that shall not die ...

    etc.

    BTW:  What part of Shakespeare's work is this quote from?  I hadn't heard it before.  

    When I lsearch for the first two lines on Yahoo, I find this quote attributed to Bayard Taylor and also to the German writer Herman Hesse.  But I don't find any sites linking it to Shakespeare, not in the first Yahoo page I get.

    Are you sure the words are from Shakespeare?

    PS -- On definitions.  The word  "but" in older English literature also is used at times to mean "except" or "except for."  

    Examples:  

    "No one but he could have done it ..."

    "I love no one but thee ..."
