  1. The absolute minimum is two (as long as you are BOTH experienced), but three is much safer.  If you have a new paddler, include another experienced paddler to partner up with the beginner.  Depending on the river, things happen fast and sometimes just being in the right place at the right time makes the difference.  The more boats you have in the water, the better the chances this will happen.  Good luck and paddle safe!!
