  1. Wow IMACHEF really over exaggerates. I have lived in Puerto Rico & in Philadelphia.. & let me tell you I have alwasy felt way more safe in Puerto Rico. In PR everyone is nice to you, you only have problems if your involved in drug dealing or something. In Philly I had my house & car broken into several times. In PR never. Its a really nice place dont be scared, you will like it. The only places to worry about are the caserios (housing projects) but they are communities that are seperated & you will not accidentally fin yourself there. Also La Perla in Old San Juan is bad. But once again a tourist wont go down there. PR is beautiful come see for yourself.  Enjoy...

  2. Stay away from what we call "caserios"

These are the equivalent of American 'projects.' If you're a tourist I really doubt that you would have to worry about that, the only dangerous place that's close to a tourist place is "La Perla" in Viejo San Juan... I don't have to tell you to go there since it's obvious at the sight of it.

I'm assuming you're not from the island so I suggest going with people from there or with people who have friends from there and stick with them. You should only have to worry about safety if you are ignorant and rude, (this is not Miami or Spanish Harlem, you REALLY need to know Spanish here)

but to answer your question... it's just like the United States, don't walk the city streets at night unless you're with locals.

  3. The Ocean...a  River..anywhere..can be dangerous...driving in a car is dangerous....eating at a restaurant   you can  choke and  die....

so  the question  can be  ask  for  anything and  anywhere in the World!!!

  4. la perla, san juan

housing projects in the island called "caserios"

and metro populated areas (only in the ghetto areas)

but u shouldn't worry about it, as long as u walk in san jaun at night with a group of 3 or more, its not bad. its very rare tourists getting killed in PR, ive only heard maybe 1-2 cases about 15 years ago. PR its one of the safest places for people to visit, compared to other countries.

  5. forests

  6. San Juan at night

  7. People always try to minimize the drug fueled violence which has griped Puerto Rico for so many years.  It is disingenious and a outright lie to tell a tourist that Puerto Rico is safe "just like the United States."  Let me assure you, it is nothing like the US.  In this respect, it's more like Beirut.

Puerto Rico has a population the same as the City of Los Angeles, California, but has a murder rate several times higher.  The murder rate is more than double of the US average of all fifty states.  Over the same amount of time, the number of people murdered in Puerto Rico, is almost double  the number of US Soldiers killed in Iraq.

The sad thing is that it's dangerous all over the island.

Of course - DUH! - you should stay away from public housing projects.  Unfortunately it's impossible to avoid them in the metropolitan area, especially in the area of Old San Juan, which actually has two.  One is within walking distance of the Cruise ship terminal and there are constant problems with tourists getting into trouble.

There is another one close to the entrance of the spanish fort.  It's actually an illegal squatter shanty town known as La Perla, it's never been recognised officially by the municipality, because drugs are sold there openly and shootings are common occurances.  The crime is so bad and so consistently violent, that even the police do not venture or patrol in there.  It's exactly like the wild west, lawless and dangerous.  The first video on the "sources" list below, shows what happens in La Perla.  This happened in broad daylight, within a few hundred feet of the entrance to the Fort.  More frightening is that it was filmed by the Police, who did absolutely nothing to intervene.  That's the reality of crime in Puerto Rico.

There's another high crime spot on the far end of Isla Verde, known as Ocean city, which is a bizarre mix of ocean front properties, ringed by several public housing projects.  There are hundreds of places that I could point out throughout the island, like Bayamon, most of Carolina, Pineros, but honestly there is no single "worst" part, it's dangerous all over the island.

If that wasn't bad enough, there is a very large population of homeless or street people.  No matter where you go, nor a what time of day, you will be hassled for money constantly.

  8. Puerto Rico is like every where else. I live in Palm Beach, Florida in a very nice neighborhood by the beach and close to Dixie and Federal Hwy. and because is full of drug addicts, homeless people and street walkers it doesn't mean that the whole place is rotten. Few weeks ago, a cop got killed in front of a very good restaurant and a woman was found death behind a dumpster. My island is very small and everything is more noticeable than other places. I was born and raise in PR. and never had a problem with nobody. I think that the real question is; how IMACHEFF know all this bad places? The island is beautiful and have lots of history, places to visit and some of the most beautiful beaches as well as the third less contaminated beach in the world "EL ESCAMBRON" in San Juan. Go visit and enjoy!
