  1. Warhammer or Warhammer 40K is a big hobby.  Its extremely popular and has a vast range of miniatures to choose from.  Its also a LOT of work to do all the painting and assembling; making minis look good is really an entire hobby in its own right.  Its also VERY expensive.  Games Workshop prices are very high, and a lot of people want to fight big battles with lots of minis.  The Warhammer 40K background is pretty cool, and there are lots of army choices with lots of different styles.

Warmachine uses smaller armies, so there will not be as much to paint and buy.  The rules are quite a bit clunkier and more oriented to small games.  Its also very popular.

Heroscape is really a different kind of game.  The minis are prepainted, and its played on a cool looking 3D hex board (pieces included with the game) instead of the tabletop.  Its a bit more kid oriented (but I know plenty of adults who like it).  Gameplay is simple and fast, but it still makes for exciting games.  It also does not require each player to have their own army; you can pick up the base set and be ready to play with 2 people (Swarm of the Marro) or 4 people (Rise of the Valkyrie), then easily add in extra units to taste.

I have not looked at Confrontation at all, so I cannot help you there.

For something a little smaller scale, you might look at BattleLore by Days of Wonder.  Its a medieval fantasy board wargame that is very easy to play, all contained in one set (though expansions add more units and options) and a lot of fun.

You could also download the rules for games like Necromunda, Warmster, Morheim or Epic Armageddon from Games Workshop - these are some good games.  Try playing with tokens first to see if you like them.

    Good luck and happy gaming!

  2. Have you checked out Mordheim? It's easy to set up and if you're interested in games with a strong narrative, then it might be for you. Games are quick and fun to play and campaigns can go on indefinitely. It's an offshoot of the Warhammer universe, which I'm a huge fan of myself.

  3. A good game that uses miniatures is Star Fleet Battles (SFB) or Federation Commander (FC).

SFB/FC is a starship combat game based on classic ST. It does not contain anything from the movies onward since they aren't licensed to do TNG etc. But the background for SFB is vast.

(Federation Commander is simpler and much easier to get into at first.)

    Just the basic Alpha races:

    Federation

    Klingon

    Romulan:

    Lyran

    Kzinti

    Hydran

    WYN:

    Gorn

    ISC:

    Orion pirates:

plus a number of other races not mentioned just in the Alpha sector.

Then theres Omega / Lesser Magellanic Cloud / simulator races+ others.

There are lots of miniatures that have been done for SFB/FC with more being released all the time. You do have to paint them yourself but there are even painting guides. for over a hundred ships. Just look around at some of the pictures associated with the mini's in the store pages.

Heres a link to Federation Commander

The SFB website is an older format but there are a lot of friendly people there.

    Whatever you pick have fun.

  4. Heroscape is Bombing!!!

It is the cheap version of Dungeons and Dragons.

You can have huge armies and castles. They also have marvel heroscape.
