Question:

Whats the most practical way to become a Mechanical Engineer in my position?

I am a first semester senior in college. My major is management information systems. By my junior year I had negative feelings towards my major and considered changing but rationalized and stuck with it.

Mechanical Engineering was the major I considered changing to, and now I'm pretty certain that I want to work in that field. I know people get a masters in areas unrelated to there bachelors but I don't think thats possible in my situation because of how specific engineering fields are (if not please let me know what grad schools would even consider).

Could someone advise me on what path I should take to become a mechanical engineer? Is getting another 4 year degree the only option?

  1. A biz major friend took a Master's in CE at University of Tennessee. She had to take almost 2 years of undergrad prerequisites to get the degree. My company would not consider her an engineer without the undergrad degree, she is now working as a CE for the government.

I suggest talking to schools where you would be interested in studying engineering. Either way, at any accredited university you will likely have to do a significant amount of the undergrad work to get either degree.
