my boyfriend and i are leaving Weds. night, and staying until Friday morning, he is kinda of shy to walk up to the poker tables, but im sure after a couple drinks, he will loosen up! He is an awesome player, and i have confidence he could win some money instead of burning it on the slots. Since there are limits, can the pot size be "big"? What's the most you have ever won?

  1. That's a great answer although the quick and dirty is since you're not winning the casino's money they don't care how much you win.  At the actual casino however they can get pretty bent out of shape when a player is up money since it's their money you are winning.  In poker they make the rake on every hand so the distribution of the chips is no matter.

  2. There are two different kinds of poker.  Tournament and cash.

In a tournament you pay an entry fee.  You are then given some chips that are worthless, and the tournament continues until one player has them all.  That player wins a big chunk of the entry fees.  The player who came second wins less, and so on.  The number of players who get paid varies, but usually the top 10% get a prize.

A cash game is different.  You buy in for cash and are given chips that have an actual cash value.  You can sit and play for as long as you like, and at any point you can leave and cash in your chips.

Poker rooms are not as intimidating as they used to be.  There is usually a friendly host desk where you can go and ask questions, and inquire about what games are available. They will also explain any house rules you might need to know.

At some busy times you will have to put your name on a list and wait, and at other times, a seat will be available right away.

As for your question about limits.  There are three different types of poker.  Limit, pot limit and no limit.

In limit the blinds are fixed as are the amounts of a bet or raise.  So if the big bet is $4, you can bet that, and someone else can raise another $4, and someone else could re-raise another $4 up to the house limit of raises.  I don't like limit poker myself.  For one thing it is much harder to push someone off a drawing hand, especially at low stakes.

In no limit (what you mainly see on TV), there are fixed blinds, but beyond that a player can bet anything up to the amount of chips they have in front of them.  So a typical $1/$2 no limit game (the smallest they have in a casino generally) may have a maximum buy in of $300.  So in theory the biggest pot would be say $3,000.  Of course you are never going to have a situation where all ten players move all in in the same hand.  But it would not be uncommon for a big pot of a few hundred dollars to develop if two or three players go all in on the same hand.

So even at the lowest limit games, there is plenty of money to win and lose.

I also mentioned pot limit games.  These are the same as no limit games except you can only bet up to what is in the pot already.  So if there is $10 in the pot, that is the most you can bet.  But if you bet the pot, the next player could raise the pot again.  So if $10 is in the pot and you bet $10, the next player could bet up to $20.  And so on.

I recommend playing $1/$2 no limit Texas Hold'em.  It is low stakes and pretty much what your boyfriend should be familiar with.  Always buy in for the maximum which should be $200-$300.  You don't want to look like a small stack at the table or you will get bullied.

As an alternative ask about low stakes tournaments.  These are commonplace these days.  With buy ins of well under $100 and dozens of players.  If you win it would not be uncommon to win 10-20 times your buy in, depending on how many players are in it.

Finally, the last thing your boyfriend should be doing is drinking to loosen up.  This will probably make him fair game to any decent players at the table.  Drinking rarely improves your poker game if you are a beginner.

Oh, and you also asked what the most you can win is.  That's really down to skill and luck, along with the stakes he is playing.  If he is new to playing in a casino, I wouldn't expect him to win very much, if anything.  It takes time and practice to become a winning player.  But he might get lucky and win a few hundred, you never know.
