Don't fall for it.  I talked to one of those schemes that use their "non-profit" status to make them sound legit, then I called one of the credit card companies to see if I could do the same kind of negotiating myself and save the fee.  I was told that it would affect my credit rating as badly as bankruptcy without any of the benefits of bankruptcy.

For a creditor to give me that kind of analysis, considering how creditors feel about bankruptcy, says a lot!
