Whats the name of the book where a Human and an Alien...?

Question

..participate in a dogfight and crash land on an uncharted world and are forced to unite together in order to survive on the hostile world. I remember that the Alien was able to reproduce asexually and when the alien died, the human took the Aliens child to its home world to make sure it would continue living a successful life or something like that. It was made into a movie and I liked the novel but I read it like 8 years ago and I cant seem to remember the name of the book. If anyone has any idea, please let me know...Thanks in advance.
