  1. “Game programmer” is the name of the career you’re thinking of, I think.  ;)  Like all jobs in game development, game programming jobs can be competitive to get, but talented programmers are always in demand in the game industry.

To get a job as a game programmer, you first need to go to college and get a degree in Computer Science.  It really doesn’t matter where you go, though I would advise staying away from any game-specific schools or programs, as they typically cost more and don’t prepare you well at all.  Along with the classes for the CS major, take a couple of classes on essay writing and tech writing, and one art class.

If at all possible, go to school near a city with a lot of game studios, like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Seattle, etc.  Most game companies will not pay for relocation for an entry level job, and some won't even interview you if you don't live in the area, so it'll be a lot easier to find a job after college if you already live near several studios.   There's a map here: http://gamedevmap.com/ that lists every game studio by city.  Try to find a college in a city with at least 10 game companies.

Once you graduate from college, you can start applying for jobs.  Many programmers are hired by game studios right out of college, but if you have trouble breaking in, look into Quality Assurance jobs first.  Looking at job postings for game programmers at sites like Gamasutra.com can also be helpful in preparing you for what to expect once you start looking for a job.

  2. Arthur?  Hanna Montana? Curious George?

  3. Do you have a guidance counselor at your high school?  The first thing I would do is talk to him/her.  He/she should be able to help you find the right schools and prepare for your future career.

I believe "video game programmer" is the correct name for your career.  Some colleges might have this specific major, or you might major in "computer science."

One other thing.  I have heard local radio commercials (in Chicago) for "Flashpoint Academy."  I have no idea how good they are, but I left the link so you can check them out if you're interested.

    Good luck.
