You are talking about the great Payne Stewart.  Him and the rest of the people on the plane died to explosive cabin de-pressurazation.  Thye were dead before the military ever got there.  I believe that it happened in 2000 or 2001, just after he won the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst #2.  I believe he was on a consulting trip about a course he was designing in Texas, not sure about the facts on that one though.
