The former Zimbabwean, now a citizen of Ireland, never actually won a major, but he came quite close as I remember?

Yep, about as close as you can get without actually winning. In the 1990 open Championship at St Andrews he tied for second place when Nick Faldo won, which was the closest he ever went, though in the same year he tied for 8th place at the PGA Championship. McNulty was one of the top players on the European tour in the mid eighties and early nineties.
