boeing has the f15 and f18 and lockheed martin has f22 and soon the f35, but the f22 and f35 are much newer then the f15 and 18 i'm curious if boeing is or already has something on the drawing board to replace their f15 or their f18. i know the f15 will be in service till 2025 so maybe they just dont have anything yet

  1. the F22 is replacing the Airforce's F15's. the F35 is replacing the Air Forces F16, and the F35 is also replacing the F18 for the USN as well as the Harrier for the Marines. F22 and F35 are the future in air/air and Air/ground

  2. Developing a new fighter, even in the early stages, is a very difficult and expensive process. This means that an aircraft manufacturer doesn't have the resources to do too many things at once. To keep from losing too much money on in-house development, they usually wait for the government to issue a requirement. This is also important given how specialized the requirements can be. It's a good idea to wait on designing something so complex until you know exactly what the customer needs. As it stands, the F-35 and F-22 are replacing most of our fighters in all services, which means that there isn't much market left. Boeing and other manufacturers are likely to focus on other aircraft like cargo and tankers for military buyers. The only thing that might bring them back into the fighter business any time soon is the possible need in coming years for a very low cost fighter to add to our more expensive Raptors and Lightnings.
