Question:

Whats the normal fan speed of a standard Pentium 4 fan?

I'm asking this question is because my fan has been a lot noisier and has been squeaking. When I checked my hardware sensors, it shows a steep jump from 2600 RPM to even now increasing 3200 RPM(This value is still increasing as I write). Is that considered normal?

  1. Which Pentium 4 are you using? Different Pentium 4 models run at different temperatures so they require different amounts of cooling. Pentium 4s are known to run very hot and consume a lot of energy; they aren't energy efficient like the Core 2 Duos.

My old computer uses an Pentium 4 (520) with Hyper Threading . Codename 'Prescott', it runs at a RPM of 1900. (Can barely hear the fan spinning; now my RPM actually dropped further to ~1100, its a bit cold here in San Francisco.)

The squeaking could mean a problem.

You can identify your Processor by using this piece of software called CPU-Z

  2. it sounds like the fan is failing and I would replace it as soon as possible.

If it is the sleeve bearing type of fan it is very common to have failure after only a couple of years of service, I would try and clean it out and oil it with some silicone spray or drops, or maybe some sewing machine oil it may last a bit longer but consider getting a higher performance heatsink/fan or at least a direct replacement ASAP.

    cheers

    *edit*

So that is an intel OEM fan on a retail box heatsink, it sounds like.  You can also try to get a can of compressed air, and give it a good shot to clean out the surrounding dirt, the heatsink & fan could be just clogged with dust and that is why it is whining a bit so a good dusting may be all that is needed.
