  11. I couldn't tell you the artists off hand because I'd have to go dig the records out from where I store them, but I have my grandmother's victrola and a number of records she played on it.  A lot of it is classical music.

  12. Jagged Little Pill

  13. Hi MCM. I have a ton of vinyl as you know...somewhere in the range of 30,000 LP's. Much of which I acquired during the 60's, 70's...80's. I still do a lot of of buying today as well, but the bulk of my collection hearkens back to another era.

Some of the oldest albums I own would be 78's from the early 1900's that belonged to my Grandparents, or things I've bought at estate sales etc. Many of these are made from hard rubber or shellac.

But as for the oldest album that I actually bought as a new release? Well, I was buying 45 singles when I was around 9 or 10. Then when I was a little older I remember really liking the Beatles around 1963 or so hearing them on the radio etc, but at that point I hadn't bought any of their music.

Then there was a record that I saw in a grocery store that I wanted really bad. It was called 'The Buggs The Beetle Beat'...with the emphasis on 'Beetle Beat' (see front cover in link below). I eventually bought it, and was under the impression that it was indeed this new Liverpool band called The Beatles that I'd been hearing all over the radio at the time...despite the difference in spelling. Well, it didn't take long to figure out it wasn't The Fab Four...but I admit The Buggs had me fooled for awhile! The cover of the album even said "The original Liverpool sound. Recorded in England". Wow was that the worst case of false advertising! Lol. It turns out these guys were really from Omaha, Nebraska, and the music was recorded in Minneapolis! I didn't realize this until maybe 10 years ago via the internet.

And now, here they are...that fabulous group from Nebraska...THE BUGGS!

Another record that I still possess from around this time frame is The Beatles VI album released a little less than a year after my Buggs escapade.

The story goes like this...On August 17th 1965, the Beatles were scheduled to play one show at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. Harold Ballard (owner of the Gardens) sold tickets to two shows and told The Beatles manager Brian Epstein the band would have to play twice. Epstein was furious, but agreed. The Beatles performed on one of the hottest days of summer, so Ballard ordered the start of each show delayed, the thermostats turned up, the water fountains turned off, and the concession stands to only sell large drinks (a fortune was made on drink sales.)

Old Harold was a con man, and a thief! But thanks to him I got to see The Beatles twice in one day!

My Father worked for CHUM radio in Toronto back then, and that day he attended The Beatles press conference held at the 'Hot Stove Lounge' in Maple Leaf Gardens. I gave my Dad a copy of the Beatles VI album, and asked if he could have the band sign it for me...I still have it to this day, though it's a little worn out. I guess I should have taken better care of my records when I was 13...but at that age who does?

Even thought the cover is worn out considerably, I have been offered upwards of a couple thousand dollars and more by a several collectors over the years, with the last offer being in around 1990. But I'll never sell it, as I treasure it more than any other record in my collection.
