Japanese archaeologists have uncovered the remains of what is believed to be the world's oldest artificial structure, on a hillside at Chichibu, north of Tokyo.

The shelter would have been built by an ancient ancestor of humans, Homo erectus, who is known to have used stone tools. The site has been dated to half a million years ago, according to a report in New Scientist.

It consists of what appear to be 10 post holes, forming two irregular pentagons which may be the remains of two huts. Thirty stone tools were also found scattered around the site.

Japanese archaeologists have discovered a shelter on the outskirts of Tokyo believed to have been built half a million years ago by an ancient ancestor of humans. If correct then that has to be the worlds oldest!

good question.... too bad i can't answer this with any degree of certainty. can this be a statue and how sound does the structure have to be.... well, they think that they have uncovered a hunan city in the ocean just south of india... (9500.. years old or around 7042 B.C.) there is also the statue called the "Statue of Zeus" which is one of the seven wonders of the world...it's been destroyed by unknow methods (around 500 B.C.)... the Giza pryamids were built around 2584 B.C, but that is only half the time of the first example though... i'll send some links if i have time

more... if that is true, then the japanesse are full of it... there is no possible way that early man could build a structure that could withstand 1/2 a million years old... this can't be true.... they just want to get some credit for finding something worth wile the same way the european anthropologists wanted to say that they found the first evolved primate...it's nonsense... we have trouble  beleiving in this underwater site found south of india, because it would be the earlies civilization built by man (like a city)... you can't pick up a rock and call it a building
