There's really no accurate number of LGB people in the world - the common statistic is 1 in 10, which was taken a long time ago and only in America. And that stat doesn't include bisexual people, mostly just g*y men.

So really, there are a lot more than 10% of the population, people all over the world choose to not come out due to homophobic obstacles in their way, so it's hard to get any kind of genuine percentage. It's safe to say there are a whole lot.

i've also heard its one in ten..i dont think the exact proportion will ever be known because lots of people arent out when they really are g*y/bi

If 1 out of 15 people are g*y then that means there are 20,000,000 g*y people in the US.

Why does it matter? Does knowing it's a large or small percentage change your life in some way, have an impact?

No, it doesn't. I fail to see how someone else's intimate, private activities are anyone else's business.
