  1. Algebra is one of the most basic forms of mathematics.  Whether you are conscious of it or not, you use algebra frequently when you figure out how much to leave as a tip at a restaurant, or how much the tax on a purchase will be.

There are lots of professions that make use of algebra; for example, suppose that, as a police officer, you were asked to determine how fast a car was traveling when it hit another car.  An application of physics (supported by algebra) would help you do that.  Or what if, as a doctor, you had to figure out the appropriate dosage of medicine to give a person who weighed 150 pounds?  Algebra.

Even if you didn't do any of these things, learning algebra makes you a stronger thinker, and that's never a bad thing.

I hope that helps.  Good luck!

  2. Many formulas involve several variables.  In solving real problems you determine which variables are known and which is unknown and then using algebra and a single formula you can rearrange it to make a new formula for your unknown.

It would be basic math instead of algebra if they gave it to you nice and easy such as: x = 1 + 2 + 3.

  3. The point of algebra is to learn algebra!!! :P

But seriously, there are many uses for algebra, especially in engineering and related fields.
