  1. Because the upconverting of regular dvd's is only a slight improvement in picture quality. The image is 1080p, but there is still lots of compression artifacts such as pixelation that are present in standard definition DVD which is pretty much eliminated in Blu-ray. As well as better color saturation and add to that Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master audio which is available on Blu-Ray but not in regular DVD.

  2. Bluray discs run the video alot more smoother. Looks amazing in 1080p

  3. It can only reformat the picture to 1080 pixels. If the camera taking the movie is not shooting at 1080, then you do not have the clearest possible picture, and if the format it is recorded in is not 1080 then you still do not have true 1080. It is the same as when you take a photograph with a low resolution digital camera, the end picture will not be as clear as if you had used a higher resolution camera and computer, regardless of the quality of your printer.

A random piece of info - Blu ray discs are much more scratch resistant than regular dvds.

  4. upconverting to 1080p you have some gain but it is not close to native 1080p. When you upconvert you just split 1 line in two and use filters to improve the image. But if you do not have an 1080p TV it doesn't matter. A good way to know the differences is go to a store and ask the salesperson to show you the differences between an upconverting and a native 1080p.

  5. Upconverted material isn't quite as high quality as native 1080p content.  Upconverting basically takes the normal resolution and inserts more lined.  Like, lets say you had a hypothetical 4x4 resolution dvd, and had something to upconvert it to 8x8.  It would just turn each of the original lines into 2 smaller lines.  You certainly get more clarity, but you lose a little bit of depth.

  6. Upconversion is hit or miss at best.

No upconversion EVER looks as good, or even close, to an actual HD recording.

  7. It can't upconvert it to 1080p only to near 1080i.  A point in blu ray dvd's is it can hold more extras if the decide to put more on there.  Plus they come in a cool tinted blue case!
