As scary as it seems to passengers, isnt it a safety precaution in the first place? Isnt it supposed to be a part of proper decision-making?

Arent there already set procedures with regards to flight patterns after "going around" (missed approach procedures)?

  1. Just another case of a control freak. Some people think they always know better than anyone else. I have done many go arounds, in every case I feel it was much safer than continuing to land. I am sure this guy would be much more angry if they had ran into another plane on the runway.

  2. Its to keep the general public in fear.. same things were being shown after any major accident, attack, natural disaster.

In this issue, they skewed and edited the interview of the Controller and the data from the FAA to deliver a message that they wanted to convey. The controller is not saying that that a go-around is unsafe, but that they are a result from possible unsafe conditions, such as a loss of traffic seperation.

In major airports, they have on average an aircraft arriving and departing every 2 minutes bases on the seperation requirements for the catagory of jets, and sometimes all things do not go as the controller planned.

There already processes for a go-around. They either issue a missed approach, or have the aircraft fly outbound, to vector them back in to sequence for landing again. Its not unsafe unless the aircraft is at min fuel, and can not afford a futher delay , and the increased workload for the controller.

Who was that guy? What creditals does he have? Is he a ATP certificated Pilot with the appropiate type rating for that specfic aircraft? If not, then he needs to shut the @!#$ up, as he doesnt have a clue.

  3. That guy was a complete D-bag that has abslolutly no knowledge of aviaiton but thinks he knows what is best.  I wonder what he would be saying if they had gone ahead and landed, which would be breaking FAA regs., and crashed into the plane infont of them.  Or lets say they are shooting an ILS in heavy IFR at minimums and can't get a visual and have to go missed.  Yeah this situation does not really happen with airliners, but I would like to hear what this idiot would say if they did not go missed and just tried to "feel" there way in.  What a complete dip sh**.  It's not like the pilot was trying to show off for his friends.  I can't stand people that know nothing about aviation, but think they have all the answers.  I also can't stand the media that also has no clue about aviation but will always be sure to throw in the scare tactic storey to make people think bad about aviation.  The media also fuels dumb a** people like the guy in the storey that start quoting what they heard on tv and think they know about aviation and how it works.  Ok, I am done with my rant.

  4. Indeed, the news stories about that are rather brainless.  Somebody ran out of copy before their print deadline, and dug this up somewhere.

A "go-around" is part of everyday flying, and no more dangerous than just being there.  In fact, go-arounds are unavoidable, and there is no better way.

The news media almost seem to be programmed to be stupid in all matters relating to aviation.

  5. the point of complaining about go-arounds is that it makes everyone feel better about their situation, knowing that others are affected in the same way.

  6. A 'go around' is a proper flight procedure, described in great detail in the books and covered thoroughly during pilot training.. It is one of the essential heads covered during the command checks as well.

It may appear scary to the passengers (being uninitiated to this phase of flying) but it is an absolutely safe and controlled maneuver which is dictated by many factors. It could be a safety precaution in many cases, while at other times, it could just be due to the dictates of the situation either on board or on the ground.

There are set procedures for initiating go arounds which could be initiated either by the ATC or the pilots. In the latter case they have to inform the ATC of their decision. After a go around, the ATC may advise the pattern to be flown prior to rejoining the circuit, or the pilots may follow the prescribed 'go around procedure'. In both cases there are set patterns to be followed, as you rightly said 'missed approach procedures'.

  7. Yes, yes and yes

The press is always over-exaggerating any problems.

  8. It is a part of normal flying, and a safety precaution .... it could be, because of any reason which make  that landing patern unsafe, it can be because of bad approach, any unsafe condition at runway, or directed by ATC ...... but it is not an alarming thing, as there are set procedures "missed approach" after going round.

  9. I think what they are really discussing isn't the "go-around" procedure rather when the procedure is directed by tower.  I think the discussion points more toward Tower work load.  For example, two weeks ago, my FO was shooting a visual to 26 into SFO.  We were inside of 1 mile when tower came up and said "Southwest, this isn't going to work, go around NOW!"  As my FO initiated the go-around and as we began to cross the approach end of the runway, I happen to see in my periphery an aircraft airborne on the crossing runway.  I realized that we were probably going to meet over the intersection so I initiated emergency thrust, took the controls and pulled the nose up to 35 degrees.  Did I mention this was all at night.  My FO had no idea what was going on as the TCAS was screaming at us.  Thankfully, we cleared the traffice but I believe that is the issue, not the procedure.  ATC feels like they are being pressed to shorten the arrival and departure gates creating potential conflicts in a go around situation.  Combine that with the fact that we have a crop of new controllers, potential conflicts are more then likely.  In regards to the passenger in the back, he has no credibility because he hasn't a clue what is going on.  His word does'nt even merit a response.  Fly safe.

  10. I guess that guy would rather land on top of a departing 757. Its a standard procedure. If an aircraft is on the runway, wouldn't he not want to land and not hit the plane? Yes, it can be a safety concern but, the tower for the most part does an excellent job. Sometimes the aircraft spacing becomes too close and they have to go around. Most people just aren't educated on the operating procedures of aviation at commercial airports. Again, its another example of the media completely blowing something aviation related out of proportion.

  11. What an idiot! It's not like the pilot was doing aerobatic maneuvers. Completely standard procedure that the pilot would have practiced hundreds of times before he got his airline transport rating. Airlines should add D-bag to the lengthy list of prohibited items on a plane....

  12. I think it is funny.  Some guy got on the news about how scared he was of the maneuver.  He said they should outlaw it.  Come on, he is saying, "don't scare me!!! I would rather we just crashed instead of having the pilot do something that made me spill my peanuts!!!"

Bunch of idiots need to be on a train instead of flying.  That is what is wrong with our world.  Bunch of idiots who don't know anything about it, but want to tell everyone else how to do it.  Kind of sounds like a politician doesn't it?  Especially the current supposed front runner.
