Here's my situation. Every morning before my routine (shower, shave, etc.) I work out for approximately 30 minutes. Do my routine and then go to work. Well some nights I like to relax in the evening with either a glass of red wine, scotch or whiskey. Is it okay to work out before or after a drink? How does that affect me?

  1. Just one or two drinks...won't matter if you have it before, during, or after.  You'll be fine.  If it were me though, I'd have it after as a "cool down"

  2. Just don't try the elliptical machine if you're wasted.  Not that I'd know anything about that....  Honestly, if it's just a drink or two, you should be fine.  Drinking dilates some blood vessels and impedes some of your body's ability to regulate heat.  So don't plan on doing hot yoga after tying one on.

In the early days of the Tour de France, cyclists would take regular beer breaks, as beer was thought to improve stamina and provide nourishment.  It is also traditional for students of Drunken Style Kung-fu to have a few shots before working-out.

  3. I tend to keep a drink in my hand during a workout, it helps to pass the time.

  4. Best to work out before the drink. Drinking should be after workout is done because alcohol raises up our blood pressure.
