  1. Things You’ll Need:

    Barbecue Grills

    Grill Utensils

    Wire Grill Brushes

    Groceries

    Meat Thermometers

top-quality steaks trimmed for the grill, between 1 and 1 1/2 inches thick

    kosher salt

    fresh cracked black pepper

Step1Start with the highest-quality steaks you can find. See "Pick a Steak," under Related eHows.

Step2 For best results, make sure the steaks are no thicker than 1 1/2 inches. Steaks that are best for grilling have thin streaks of fat running through them. This soft internal fat partially melts during cooking and keeps the steak from drying out.

Step3Start a hot grill fire. If using a gas grill, turn the gas as hot as it will go. If using charcoal, let the charcoal heat up until it is coated with ash, then spread it out so you have an evenly hot bed of coals.

Step4Season the steaks on both sides with kosher (uniodized) salt and fresh cracked black pepper. Let the seasoned raw steaks rest for a few minutes.

Step5Place the steaks on the hot grill. The grill should be hot enough for you to hear a sizzle when the steaks touch the grill grate.

Step6 Cook for 3 to 5 minutes per side. To create attractive cross-hatched grill marks, give the steaks a quarter-turn halfway through cooking on each side.

Step7For best results, move the steaks to other parts of the grill if flame-ups occur.

Step8 See Tips for testing for doneness. When done, allow the steaks to rest for a few minutes before cutting them. This helps them retain those great juices.

  2. After you have "seared" it like the recipes you are using say to, turn down the heat on the grill and cook it until you have the right color inside for your taste.

Or throw caution to the wind and turn down the grill from the start.  As long as you are willing to tend the grill you can cook a tasty steak by the "low and slow" method, too.

  3. looks like everybody has given some good advise to help determine what you need to do to cook a steak.

One of the biggest things you can do to insure the proper cooking of a steak rare or well. is to use a good cooking appliance I would like to recommend that you look at the diamond charcoal island grille.

All natural wood and charcoal cooking that is as convenient to use as a gas grill, but cleans up like a kitchen sink

  4. 4 min on each side will just sear the outside nicley

after its seared move steak off direct flame and cook 8-10 min on indirect heat depending how thick it is

  5. The 4 minutes is average for less than 1" steaks.

But your results will vary for your grill.

I never cover steaks, that's for indirect heat, like for chicken.

  6. That sounds about right..... try 5 mintues on each side. or six. maybe you turned them too quickly.

    hope i helped:)

  7. Many of our favorite grilling recipes recommend grilling steak over a direct-medium fire (350°F to 375°F) on a covered grill. If you're using a gas grill, the idea is to start the grill on high for about 10 minutes to get the grilling surface searing hot, then reduce the heat to medium for grilling. On charcoal, a good rule of thumb is to create a single layer of coals to achieve these grilling temperatures.

Grilling time will depend on the type of grill (charcoal or gas), the cut and thickness of the steak and the doneness you want. For grilling times we use the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com. Just enter the details and it will calculate the grilling times for each steak and give you instructions for when to put on and turn each steak so they all come off the grill at the same time grilled the way you want them.

It's also recommended to allow steaks to stand at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before grilling, and to let them rest for 5 minutes after grilling to keep them juicy.

    Hope this helps.

  8. How do you like your steaks?  I like mine medium, meaning some pink in the middle.   You gotta just get to know your grill.   I never go on the highest temp, I go about medium.  I let it go about 6 minutes per side.  One tip which helps is if you push on the steak and see how tough it feels when you think it is done, that will give a clue.   If it feels like the center of your palm then it is probably medium.
