Whats the social and historical significance of life of pi?

It is one of the most original survival stories, where the main character is an active participant in three prominent world religions who embarks on an unlikely journey of the not-so-Pacific Ocean with a zoo full of animals in a lifeboat.  It's a groundbreaking book.  If you haven't read it, you'll never be able to answer this question, and it is such a fun read!  I'd also say that it's hard to stick it in any one genre too.  I think it combines elements of a comedic survival drama with science fiction...haven't read anything like it!
