  1. 40 is about right.

You can figure it out easily by dividing up the times in a race.

The average harness race falls just under 2 minutes (1:50 to 1:59), so figure 31 or 32 mph there as an average - fastest quarters are 25.4 to 27 at most tracks, so you can figure it creeps up towards 35mph.

Thoroughbred racing , they can go about 43 seconds to a half mile at full flight, so figure about 40-42 mph at their fastest stride, high 30's as an average

    Hope it helps!

  2. The fastest 5 furlong course in England is Epsom Downs where the course record time, with electric timing, is something around 55 seconds, so if you work on an average of one minute for 5 furlongs you get 37.5 MPH.

In the US I believe they have sectional timing for each 200 metres or per furlong and they also have quarter horse racing over 2 furlongs only, so you can work something out from that if you wish to calculate maximum speed.

  3. up to 45 mph depending on the ground

  4. I would say they race in sprints has fast as 40 miles a hour.

  5. I would say 40/45mph would be the top limit. It all depends on the ground, their strength, and how hard the jocks push them 2 urge on. I say it also depends if the horse is willing 2 run 4 the jock. A horses attitude in a race is a major thing. For instance, if its playing around in the dust/sand, it most likely means its excited and has alot of good energy and will most likely run fast 4 you.

  6. Well, I can tell you that the ones I back run a whole lot slower than the rest!
