Hit away. It doesn't necessarily have to be hooked up to a basketball stand, but that what it works best on. You can hook it up to a skinny tree, a light stand, or anything else in the shape.

Utter Chaos is right. It is a Derrick Jeter Hit Away and it works well for timing and swing in place of soft toss or a similiar drill when alone. It connects to any sturdy pole easily. Make sure you have room to swing and for the ball to wrap and unwrap around the pole. They are not very expensive and worth the small cost.
