I have a Colt 45 serial No135384. Patented APR 20 1897. SEPT 9 1902. DEC 19 1905. FEB 14 1911. I have the 2 orginal(I think) clips and the US issued holster. Gun and all are in good shape.

I have no idea what the gun is worth so any help would be much appreciated...

  1. I have seen them go from $500 to $2500

There are just so many variables

  2. I'll never quote a gun sight unseen.

    Originality - Condition-condition-condition

But it sounds good. There are other keys not mentioned to tell if the upper and lower are matched or armory rebuilt Mix-matched over the last 97 years.

You probably have around a $1,000. gun there

  3. It is difficult to appraise a gun's value without seeing it.  A few years ago I was looking for such a pistol as you are describing.  I needed it as a prop for a book I wrote and neither one I found would be 'loaned out' for the purpose I intended.  One was perfect as it appeared all original.  The other had after-market Pachmyer grips.  I located these guns 300 miles apart.  The 'perfect' one was for sale, for fifteen-hundred dollars.  The 'other' one, the owner could be pursuaded to sell for $1,200.  He later came down to $900 (this was in 2003), but by then I'd already sent my manuscript to the publisher substituting an era pocket watch for the 1911 in the illustration.  Back then even $900 was WAY over my gun buying budget.  That was then and this is now...  This year I bought a beauty of a 1911 for just over a thousand US dollars.  Of course its a modern one, the Colt 1911 Lightweight Commander in .38 Super.  A great shooter!

    Good luck.

  4. if you are serious about it take it to a reputable gun shop and ask them to do an appraisal on it.

  5. Value is going to be totally dependent on what a collector opines the actual condition to be. Your 1911 was manufactured in 1916. I recently sold a 1911, made in 1918, in excellent condition (98%) for $950.00 on GunBroker. Yours could be worth more or less.

Placing an accurate value on collector’s guns in today’s market is very difficult. Gun prices are generally rising, overall, and the Blue Book values are lagging behind the market by at least six months. To get a more realistic view of current prices, check out www.gunbroker.com, www.auctionarms.com, and www.gunsamerica.com to see what’s selling. Keep in mind that what you see there is asking prices, and not actually what the firearms selling for, but it will give you some ideas.
