  1. cnn.com my friend

  2. About stopping the Genocide of the ossetians

  3. Mainly it is about Russia attempting to restore USSR in its former "glory" and borders.

Russia can't stand the idea of independence of former soviet republics, especially if those republics are of pro-western orientation.

Russia financed and armed S.O. separatists since 1990. Whenever they needed military help Russia provided it promptly. Later, Russia handed out Russian passports (in violation of Russian laws) to  separatists.

On aug. 1st S.O. separatists started daily shelling and small arms fire at Georgian side. few days later planted a bomb on Georgian side of the border, 6 police officers were injured.

On aug. 7 separatists started shelling two Georgian villages and in half an hour or so Georgian started their attack and captured most of S.O.Which is when Russians got involved and started military actionto "protect their citizens".

That's where those Russian passports became handy.

in 3 days Russia recaptured all of S.O., but  didn't stop there in their efforts to "protect Russian citizens" and entered the territory of Sovereign Georgia, which they occupy even today despite their multiple promises to start the withdrawal.

I guess they're still searching for Russian citizens in Georgia to "protect" them.

meanwhile Russian army successfully "liberated" Georgian homes, stores and banks of  tv and audio tech, silverware, Georgian army uiforms and pretty much everything else they could take with them.

Used shoes from Georgian military bases were also deemed as military threat to Russian and Ossetin people and confiscated by the brave Russian liberators.

I'm not joking on that one, check the attached link...

Russian soldier clearly says he found nice shoes for himself, another replies there's more of those really nice shoes...

    Pathetic...

P.S. I wouldn't believe Russian propaganda BS about genocide committed by Georgians. So far Russia hasn't provided single evidence to support their claims.

HRW and other independent sources report 44 dead including civilian and military.

What has happened in reality is that brave S.O. army demolished empty Georgian villages, burning and looting them. Then, their President Kokoiti (even most of the Russian call him a bandit anyway) declared that Georgian refugees won't be permitted to return.

    That is ethnic cleansing.

So, in the end this war was about two things:

    a) Ethnic cleansing of Georgians from S.O. (looting and robberies are a little bonus for Ossetins, Chechens and Cossaks, though Russian army looted their fair share as well).

    b) Russia made first significant step in rebuilding Russian empire and tested western resolve to oppose them. (looting Georgian cities was a little bonus for Russia liberators). Plus now they occupy half of Georgia, talk about installing Russian base in that territory and so on.

  4. georgia shot down two Russian military planes and Russia retaliated

  5. Pride and patriotism.  People in South Ossetia and Abkhazia are very loyal to Russia (many hold Russian passports), yet most countries, as well as the United Nations, contend that those territories are within Georgia.

Georgia only really held "control" over a fraction of South Ossetia, and technically, they started this recent escalation.  But, Russia has reacted with disproportionate force.  They have gone out of their way to kill innocent civilians, destroy Georgia's military and destabilize Georgia's government.

Vladimir Putin (and presumably Dimitri Medvedev) believe that dissolving the Soviet State was one of Russia's worst points in history.  Russia is extremely wealthy (oil) and extremely proud, so they would like to regain some of the power they used to have.
