  1. cold

    very cold

  2. its not cold, i am telling you. but people think its cold. so dont even worry. if it gets cold it only takes a day or two to go away which is like - 15 to -20 ish... i am living in calgary not exactly in south alberta but ya still, i dont think there would be a lot of difference. no humidity, so in spring and summer its great!!

    enjoy the Alberta weather!

  3. winter is pretty cold - it can get down to minus 38 °C - colder when you factor in the wind. The good side of that is that Alberta is a fairly dry province so you do not always feel the cold as much as you would elsewhere. The bad side of that is you can freeze your ears and fingers and not know it. In more humid places like Quebec, you know when it is that cold and freezing ears and fingers hurts like mad.

Albertans think they get a lot of snow. Those of us who have spent winters in the east know this is not true but we let them complain about it so that we can complain about our weather LOL Because it is dry, the snow tends to be light and floats around. On the highways, it seems to swirl towards you as you drive. People unfamiliar with it have been known to feel a hypnotic effect and sometimes drive off the road.

Calgary is a wee bit different in that it is right in line for the Chinook winds which move through the mountains from the Pacific. They can change the temperature many degrees in a very short time. Chinooks can last from a few minutes to almost all winter. My first year in Calgary, the crocuses were up in February but died in March when the Chinook stopped and the weather went below zero again. There is an expression often heard in Calgary -"If you don't like the weather, wait a bit.  It will change!" And it usually does. :o)

Spring is a nice departure from the winter cold - sometimes. There seems to be one last snow storm in May and this can happen after a couple of weeks of very nice warm weather. But the flowers start blooming and the birds come back so it's pretty decent.

Summer is hot but seldom unbearably so - again because of the lack of humidity. Dry heat is always easier for the human body to contend with.

Fall sees the leaves fall - not as pretty as in Quebec and Ontario but the mixture of various shades of yellow and the red berries of the ash are really quite impressive.

A few of my little anecdotes from my years in Alberta.

There were days when in Calgary the sky was blue, the sun was shining and the temperature was not too bad at all but the highways in/out of the city were all closed for blowing snow storms.

I used to drive taxi there and once I parked to go ring my next fare. Before He got down to the car, a hail storm had pretty well hemmed me in and we couldn't go anywhere. That was a costly storm especially for new car lots who's cars all got hail damaged. Hail storms do happen but that was a record setter I think.

Once we had a cloud burst that filled in all the underpasses. I have a picture of one of my fellow cab drivers caught in an underpass, water almost covering his car and him sitting on the roof waiting for rescue.

Those are not normal features of the weather but they are things I have never forgotten and I thought you might find interesting.
