  1. it depends on the brand and the type of kayak. but in my years of professional kayak racing i have found that you tend to sway as you paddle making it very easy to steer but much harder to go fast. this does not affect regular racing kayaks as much though because of the length.

  2. Each boat manufacturer is different.  Some kayaks are termed "HV" for "high volume" and some are "LV" for low volume.   Some boats don't indicate anything in the name to tell you its capacity.  I own a 1-person recreational kayak that has a weight capacity of 450 pounds, and I know that many Sit On Tops (SOTs) have very high weight limits.

If you're a big guy or girl, there are plenty of boats to choose from.  If you're renting, don't worry, most rental places have boats that you'll be perfectly safe in.  I now paddle a sea kayak, and one of the best instructors I've ever had is like 6'7" and probably 290# (just guesstimating).  Awesome sea kayaker.  So, not all kayakers are scrawny little people, and the industry has come around to accommodate people of all sizes.

After you've found a boat or two you think you like, check out the reviews on them here:

    Good luck, and have fun!

  3. Whitewater kayaks generally come in 2 or 3 sizes for different paddler weights.  The specs for the boat will give the paddler weight range.  I just looked at the Dagger site and some of their flatwater boats come in 2 sizes.  Their Blackwater boats come in 295 LB and 345 LB capacity versions.  They are parobably par for the industry.  Check the web sites for the boats you are interested in and the specs will be available.

  4. As far as I am aware there is no limit as such. There are several types of kayak depending on what sort of paddling you want to do.  Each kayak comes with its own weight limit.  Remember though most kayaks also allow room to store some luggage
