  1. Here's a good packing list to use:

    http://www.cruisereviews.com/PackingList...

The main thing is: don't take too much with you.  There are laundry facilities on board for passenger use.  If your family is dining in the main dining room every night, take 2 pairs of pants (not jeans) or skirts and a few dressier shirts to mix and match outfits just for dinner.  There's always a formal night in the main dining room, so if your family is going to enjoy that night, be sure to take something special to wear.

Take 2 swimming suits with you if you are going to enjoy the pools (which are saltwater) or the beaches in port.

You need a photo id other than the id you will get when you check in for the cruise.  If you have a passport, that will make it a lot easier.

Also, there are bound to be clubs for teens, so take some clothes to hit the clubs in the evening.

If your family has not booked a few shore excursions, you can do so now.  Look online, find your cruise, and it should have a list of the available excursions.  You won't get a real price on them until you board, but at least you can get some ideas.  The website should also have features on Freedom of the Seas and all the activities that are available onboard.  You'll get a newsletter every morning with ship news and daily activities.

Cruises are pretty fun, at least, as fun as you make them.  I thought that the best part of my cruise was all the people I met.  The ship activities are varied and pretty fun.  The shore excursions are awesome!  The food is good and plentiful, plus, if you don't like it, you can get something else, so don't be afraid of trying new foods.

  2. All cruises are good!  I love RCI.  I have taken 5 cruises through them.  They will have plenty of activities planned on the ship for you to do.. or you can always just lay out by the pool and soak up the sun.  I find that I always over pack on cruises.  You will need the proper attire for the dinners (check the book you were given it will tell you how many casual and formal days you will have) and then you will need daytime clothes for the boat, for me it was usually shorts and a comfortable shirt or sometimes capris.. then you will need clothes for your ports of call.  Usually I tool good walking shoes shorts and tank tops because it was always HOT HOT HOT.  At least a couple of bathing suits if you are planning on usuing the pool daily that way one will always be dry.  They have laundry service on board, so you can always have something laundered if you run out.
