Whats up with CA "interstates"?

Why are so many CA freeways called interstates? hardly any of them actually go to another state. the only ones that come to mind are the 5, the 10 and the 15. other freeways like the 210, the 710, the 405, and the 605 are all interstates, but they dont go to other states. why are they called interstates then? and also, why dont some freeways follow the number system? like the 110N(which is also an interstate but doesnt go to another state)? and the 105W?

  1. My guess would be that since they (were?) funded by the federal govn't for hwy construction after WW2, the federal govn't was building "interStates".

So, interstates is more of the funding source here, - rather then the physical destination of the highways.

  2. Anything that the government gets their hands on always gets f'd up.

  3. Calling them "Interstates"?

I thought the big roads were just called "THE"!

"Like, I mean, take THE five to THE 405W and then THE 210 to like THE 605, ya know!"

    or something like that.

  4. It is quite a misnomer. Why do you drive on parkways and park in driveways?

SIlly nuances of the english language.

  5. They are part of the interstate highway system.  They connect to the major interstates.

State routes (like the 22 and 55) are funded from a different program.
