ok so everyones been saying that hurricane gustav is like huge and dangerous but this is such a silly question ok so since hurricanes get bigger in warm water or stronger or whatever... if i had a freeze machine & froze the part of the ocean where the hurricane was does that mean the hurricane would then get smaller and less strong?

  1. It is a weak category 3.

New Orleans is now in the path of the hurricane. Winds there are about 82 mph with gusts of up to 92 mph to 95 mph.

But the direct hit will be on Houma, Louisiana, so New Orleans will partially be spared. I think the hurricane's eye will hit Houma in 23 minutes.

And the levees in New Orleans? I think there will be a storm surge of 10 feet so the levees may be overwhelmed and New Orleans may be inudated in about 15 feet of water. I say that the break in the levees there will have a chance of 68 percent. But if the hurricane hits a little bit east...the center of it....the chance of the levees breaking is about 44 percent.

  2. Yes, that would be quite effective, as you would deprive the hurricane of it's energy source.  But the amount of energy you would need to remove from the water in order to freeze it  would be incredibly high, and you would have to safely store or move that energy you took from the water to somewhere else.
