Whats up with my conversion van's speakers' ground?

Question

so im looking to replace the radio in my conversion van (99 dodge) and what they did was run the left hot to one speaker, the right hot to the other speaker, and use the chassis ground to go to the speaker's ground, and cut off the radio's speaker ground... this doesnt make sense to me and i dont know if my new radio will burn out from hooking it up the same, any help would be appreciated.

Most head units ground the negative to speakers.  It's not worth gambling on though.  Run new wires to your speakers.
