Whats up with rented dvd's always being scratched up?

I hate it when there are skips. Whats wrong with people, don't they know how to handle dvds?

Every time! One time, I rented one that was so scratched it wouldn't even play! Why can't people just take care of dvds?

They didn't buy them and don't own them, so they don't care.

I'm afraid that there is a mind set where people have no consideration for anyone else.  It doesn't even occur to them that their actions effect others.  They don't care about anyone else, even their own children!  If something isn't theirs in a materialistic way, then it doesn't matter how they treat it.  Thus scratched up DVDs.
