Question:

Whats up with show names?

On here I see people asking about show names for obviously older horses. In the circuits I ride the only "show name" you can use is the registered name of the horse. I ride in western pleasure, barrel race, team pin and rope. Am I missing something? Is it a UK thing? English thing? or what?

  1. show names are just fun to have and make a horse seem more like flashy...for example my friends horse is named Coby and his show name is Ima Tru Impressor

  2. Well where i show the horses have a barn name and then a show name (there registered name.) Like my horses name is Luke but when i show him i use Ducati which is his regestered name. I ride hunters/jumpers,but i have seen western people do the same.

  3. LOTS of horses aren't registered.. and alot of people don't use them...

my horse is JC registered as "Hello Boss" (racing name..) but his show name is "Mister Motivation" and his barn name is Beau.

if your not doing breed shows you can call your horse whatever the heck you want!

  4. Some people are asking because their horse isn't registered yet and they want a cool name for him/her. Or they are asking because they want to change their horses show name. Or they are asking for like a 'barn name'.

  5. sorry i dont that answer

  6. if you have a quarter horse or paint or pinto all of them that are registered have show names it all disiplines and all ages

  7. Mostly they want a flashy sounding name for a non-flashy horse. Registered names cannot be changed; it's a case of wanting to call Dobbin "Dancing Dobbin's Fancy Shoes" because it sounds better than plain old Dobbin...

  8. Agree with your comments, in the UK, we have an equine passport system that details the horses details and family tree.  It also details the show name and in some cases the stable name of the horse.

Whilst stable names can be adapted, the show name can't, unless you have a sponsor's pre-fix to you horse's show name.

  9. For any open show you can create your own name to show under.  In fact, a couple years ago when QH started recognizing Dressage shows, they had to try to track down the registered names of the QHs being showed.  Many QH owners showed them under more "dressage" names.  Its true that breed shows require the registered name, but there is a big, big horse show world that has nothing to do with registration numbers and breed points.

  10. I asked because my horse isn't registered, and his/her show name does not have to be the registered name. It is for English Hunter/Jumper.
