Whats up with the Canadiens?

They have the most cup wins, so why haven't they won in a while? Why do most people hate them? French canadiens are rude sometimes but is there more to it than that when it comes to hating them?

(I'm a big Habs fan myself, I don't want to hear s*** on them or how great detroit is. Detroit can kiss my a**! Tell me when they catch up to Montreal in cup wins. XD)

  1. I see you brought some big time hockey fans with you. Most hockey fans have a lot of respect for the Habs.

  2. Montreal are winning their share of cups now that they playing field is equal.

The majority of their early cups were won when they had an unfair advantage in the recruitment of junior players. In the sixties that changed. Also in the seventies two things happened. Toronto fell into a long period of terrible ownership (the Ballard years) and Montreal had a genius (Sammy Pollock) running the team.

During that era Montreal still had an advantage in Quebec because the scouts were loyal to "Les Canadiens" and many good young Quebec hockey players flew under the radar.

With the advent of Central scouting services this doesn't happen the way it used to. Now everyone has an equal chance in Quebec.

With free agents Montreal has a bigger problem than the rest of the league with the highest Income Tax rates in the league. Players just don't make as much playing in Montreal as in the rest of the league.

As Homes said all they need is a big time scorer and they will be great again. If they can't get Sundin this year watch for them to clear some cap space for a run at a big time free agent in two years when the first of the young guns become available.

People don't hate French Canadians. French Canadians hate people.

  3. All french people r rude and i luv canadiens my best friend is one

I HATE RED WINGS sorry red wings fans

  4. Well, they have a one in thirty chance of winning the Cup every year. That's only a little over 3%.

  5. Montreal used to have a rules advantage years ago before the draft that bugged fans of other teams as the team got better and better. At one time they were really lousy so the league allowed the Habs the first choice of any two French players in Quebec before everyone else could sign junior players.

So the team became pretty stacked with talent for quite a while. When the draft came along in the 60s and Montreal's advantage was phased out, the Habs were still able to come up with great lineups because of the great management of GM Sam Pollock. Pollock was years ahead of other GMs in using the draft system to his advantage and built a stockpile of draft picks by sending old players to gullible teams.

Once Pollock was gone other GMs grew smarter and Montreal switched ownership, GMs and coaches came and went and the Habs although always a classy organization, became just like any other team in the league fighting for talent. In fact their consistent level of play probably worked against them over the years because they never bottomed out to the point where they cleaned house or fell low enough to restock with high draft picks.

  6. Nobody cares about the Canadiens.  You're not worthy of criticism, so why do you feel people hate on you?  I assure you, French Canada is not a topic of discussion in Detroit, because you're not a concern.  Detroit doesn't even see you.  You're not on our level.  French Canada is soft, arrogant, and irrelevent.  It's 2008, get over yourselves.

We will catch up to you in Cup wins.  This dynasty is far from over.

Homes - I am not sure if you are from Canada or if your view of Canadians is limited to a Florida-based perspective, but I can tell you, the difference in attitude and respect I see even between those from Ontario (which is still heavily populated with anti-Americans) and those from Quebec is a night and day difference.  Quebec is every bit as arrogant and disrespectful as they are portrayed to be.  Not all of them are the same, obviously, so I do not mean to offend any non-partisans from Quebec that would make the province an otherwise decent region.  The majority of French Canadians, however, bring any seemingly unwarranted dissent upon themselves.

  7. whats up with the canadians whats down with them?

  8. >>>Why haven't they won in a while?

Over the last 5 years, I have noticed too much guarding the puck in my opinion.  They always have great luck with goaltenders, but just not enough scoring.  One more good power forward would do them some good.

    >>>French Canadians are rude sometimes but is there more to it than that when it comes to hating them?

I am not so sure about that.  I have I met some Canadians that are rude?  Absolutely, but I have also met some pretty big American jerks, as well.  It does disturb me when some Canadians feel the need to constantly compare the two countries...as if the US is the country to beat.  Most French Canadians have been pretty cool to me, and I find it disturbing that there is more to it than hating them?  I don't get the question.

I am also a Habs fan, and I live in Florida....go figure.

  9. "Detroit can kiss my a**! Tell me when they catch up to Montreal in cup wins. XD "

    Maybe it's thing's like this ?

  10. lets see the canadiens have how many cups.... 24 and the elafs have 13.. the wings now have 11 next year it will be 12 only one away from the leafs.. thn we will pass the leafs and the way the habs are looking now a days i believe the wings will catch thm in cups before they even win another cup

    GO WINGS!!!!

  11. There is an easy answer to that.  They won the bulk of their Cups back in the original six days.  Back when Montreal was pretty much the capital of hockey and their was no draft.  If there was a draft, You can bet the rest of the league would have had more Cups.  Now that there are 30 teams in the league, it actually takes a good organization to be a perennial winner.  That is why Detroit has been a great team since Mike Illitch took over as the owner of the team.  Sure, Detroit has had its share of good players, which is a result of good scouting and management, but good players don't mean automatic success.  Just look at the Rangers since '94.

Success nowadays doesn't happen over night.  It took the Wings like 30 years of c**p before they started to be good again.  Montreal now is getting good players and doing the right things to get back to glory.  But it still doesn't mean that just because its Montreal, they are guaranteed more Cups.  They are the best team in the East right now, yes Pens fans, the Habs are better than the Pens.  But they will need good fortune to win the East next year, but sheer luck to overcome the West.

  12. i have no respect for habs fans so whoever said that hockey fans respect them, was wrong.

theyre obnoxious and stupid, and they act like theyre like hardcore fans, but round 1 game 5 of the playoffs this year, against the bruins, when we were winning 5-1..i clearly remember seeing habs fans walking out of the bell centre

    thats not a real fan.
