  1. Markups in the discount chain stores are significantly more than 10x.  Try more like 50x or more.  Here's what they do: buy a cheap $2 frame, mark it up to $170 then have a 50-70% off sale.  Now that $170 frame is only $70 or $80!!  Well guess what?  They're still s******g you.  They pull the same c**p with their lenses.  But the american consumer falls for it every time.  

    In my office, I buy quality frames and use only quality lenses.  My markups are WAY WAY WAY less than discount chains and my stuff is WAY WAY WAY better.  As always, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.


  2. Ah, the deep dark optical secrets... It really depends on where you go. In a private office the mark up is typically between 2-3 times where as it's much higher in chain opticals, sometimes greater than 10 times wholesale (they buy such a huge amount of frames, and a lot of times they buy out a company's discontinued frames, so they get them much, much cheaper than your private, family owned Optometrist office).
