  1. I just answered your other question, so some of the info you want is there.

If you have component out on the DVD player, but no component input on your TV (and it sounds like you don't since you say there are only yellow and white jacks) -- it's three RCA jacks coloured red, blue and green -- you can't use component.

Don't worry, your DVD player can be connected via the comosite (yellow) jack and will work fine with your TV.

Note that component (and composite) are video only. Audio connects via the white (or red and white is stereo) jacks. So you need to connect both the video and audio.

Should you get a new TV though you would get a better picture (not night and day better, but an improvement) from the component connection.

  2. Prefered cable connection in order of picture quality.

    HDMI

    Component - (Red Green Blue)

    S-video

Composite- (Yellow. {Red and white are audio connections})

  3. The storeman is just trying to make more commission from you. He'll say anything he can to get you to buy more stuff. I bet he tried to sell you an extended warranty too. Your TV can't handle component video. If you try it, the best you'll get is a black and white picture. Unless you want to buy a new TV, stick with composite video.
