Question:

Whats with my Corn Snake??

I recently bought my snake from another person and she mentioned him going to be shedding soon so I THINK that may be it but...

He is always in his hide or wrapped around/under a plant thats in the tank with him.

Ive taken him out on two occasions now and when I go near him he doesnt make a solid hissing noise but more like a burst of air getting out (SST) kind of noise

And I dont know much about snakes if they are naturally shy or not but he wont go near me and usually shys away.

Any advice?

  1. corns are nocturnal and normally hide or look for somewhere dark to hide. as long as  he feeds and has water and hide boxes there shouldnt be anything to worry about. they will hide for longer if getting ready to shed because they dont hunt for food while doing this. why is he hissing anyway? a tame corn that is handled lots wont normally hiss at you.

  2. i don't think it's the shedding. it may just not be used to being held and doesn't like people. or may just not be used o you yet. you could try just handling it more and it should warm up to you in time. hope this helps.

  3. Some corn snakes are very shy.  They may hide away most of the time.  Do you know about how old he is?  Has he been handled much?

As for his shed, some corns don't want to eat or anything during shed.  Is his color rather dull, and his eyes covered by a bluish scale?  If so, once the eye returns to normal color, you can expect the shed to occur fairly quickly.  Afterwards, I've noticed that my corn tends to be rather sensitive for a few days.

Be patient with the animal, and try to pick up some good books on caring for corn and rat snakes.  There is also a great deal of information on the web.  (See below, and also do a search on "Corn Snake Care" for a wealth of information.)
