  1. I don't know if you mean the company, or that particular bike, but I'll try to answer both.

GT as a company is still very good and puts out a lot of high-quality bikes and ideas.  They've been an innovater in mountain bikes since the early 90's and were a major player in advances in full-suspension design.  They still have some very famous and skilled riders that they sponsor and contribute a lot to racing all over the world.   They started to get a bad name for themselves 8 or 10 years ago when they were bought by Pacific Cycles (and btw, Mirage has all of that info spot-on).  When Pacific bought them, they stopped honoring warranties and essentially trashed a whole warehouse full of spare parts....and with the flurry of design changes in the mid- to late-90s, that left a lot of people screwed when it came time to replace broken frame parts and suspension pivots, etc.   There was also an issue where they really dissed a famous bmx rider whose name I can't remember now....pretty bad press at the time.  But today, they're back to being a GREAT company, very helpful and knowledgeable, and they employ some great designers and engineers.  They've never fully recovered from the bull they went through (and/or helped cause), but they're honestly a great company still.

As for that bmx bike you're looking at, it's a solid entry level bike.  Nothing special with the parts, but the frame is strong. It's a bit heavy overall, but it'll be durable (except for maybe the rims, but that's just part of bmx....trashing wheels....so you can get better ones later if you need to).   Also, in the bmx world, there are so many bike companies and every one of them has their following of fashionistas, punks, and elite riders....so people tend to support whoever feels best to them and has a decent bike, or whoever is sponsoring the riders that they admire most.

Long answer....hope it helps you out, though.  Enjoy the new bike and shred up the park!   :o)

  2. Dorel is the parent company of Pacific Cycles.

  3. In my opinion GT- along with Schwinn and Mongoose- have gotten a bad rap since they were bought out by Dorel Corporation. Just wait to see what happens to Cannondale once you see THEM at Walmart.

As long as you buy these brands at a bike shop and not at Walmart type places or Sports Authority you'll be fine.

EDIT: OK, ok... Brunswick purchased Mongoose and Roadmaster, Pacific purchased them from Brunswick and also bought GT and Schwinn, then Dorel took control of Pacific and purchased Cannondale. Is that better?
