Whats wrong with having a Southern accent?

Does it really sound that bad if you have a soft Southern drawl in your voice? I think it actually sounds better than some of the harsh Northern accents to be honest. But in society people think Southern accent means you sound stupid. Why is that?

I live in New York now and I have a strong Southern accent(New Orleans). I have had some Northern people instantly stereotype me as slow or stupid. Other people have been charmed by it and have complimented me how nice it sounds.

I tell people that we don't just talk slow-we do everything slow. In the South where I lived we enjoy life and take it easy. Besides, it's too d**n hot in the South to do anything fast LOL.

Just let that friendly "Southern hospitality" shine through and people will get over it.

I don't think they are annoying, but i live in the south. The only thing that annoys me about northern accents are the way they say " you guys" instead of y'all. I love all accents. I love how accents represent who you are and where you come from. It wouldn't be very interesting if we all sounded the same.

stop hatin on Northern Accents.....New York accents are cool, cuz I have one and so do cool actors like robert deNiro, Al Pacino and Sly Stallone.

But theres nothing wrong with southern accents in general, i actually like some of them (Yat & Charleston especially).

The only accents i expressly dislike are the Valley Girl Accent and the Newscastern accent because they are artificial, you have to actually TRY to talk like that, nobody is raised sounding like that. People should just talk naturally and stop imitating television in an attempt to sound "educated" cuz it just sounds pretentious. just be who you are

I use to think southern accents were bad until I went to Boston.  GOSH!!!  I am not trying to be accentist  but Boston accents are ANNOYING!!!!!

Now southern accents seem like a BLESSING!!!

There is nothing wrong with a southern accent!! I love relishing in differences!! I am from Canada and my husband is a born and bred southerner with the cutest accent I have ever heard, although he claims I have the accent!!! We tease each other about it but we wouldn't have each other any other way!!!

and I agree, Boston Accents are so hard on the ears!!! :)
