  1. The water pump is about to disintegrate.

  2. You indicated that there is a flowing of the coolant and the radiator is hot from top to bottom. This indicates that the thermostat is opening and the water pump is moving the coolant. The next item is the cooling fan, if electric does it cycle? or mechanical does the clutch engage? ( not certain which a 91 protege has) If the fan operates then the next suspect is the radiator, if 1 in 3 to 1 in 4 of the coolant tubes in the radiator are plugged (a flush will not clear a totally blocked tube because the chemical simply will not get to the blockage) the engine will overheat after time and that appears to be the situation.  A replacement radiator may be in your future.

  3. Did you replace your water pump?

Check for a rotten cap on the distributor end of the engine where the water hose returns from the heater core.

  4. Take a look at the water pump.

  5. Water pump. Get a new one.

  6. if everything seems to be in working order, check to see if you got the right thermostat. after that if it is still a problem try putting an a therm. that opens at a cooler temp.
