Whats wrong with my PC?

Ok! about a week ago my brother ran AVG. It asked him to restart the computer, so he did. When the computer restarted, a screen came up saying the pc could not restart because a file was corrupt (system 32??). He couldnt restart it in safe mode either. Soooo my genius brother decided to reinstall Windows XP. While installing, it said it couldn't copy a bunch of .dll files. (Dont know if thats good or bad.) So now we have no Internet Connection :( We called our ISP, Comcast but they say nothings wrong with the Connection. I think we installed XP wrong. Please Help!

He couldn't copy the .dll files during the reload because the cd is probably bad (scratched up). If he got Windows loaded successfully you will then need to install Drivers in order to get your Video, Modem, Nic, Audio to work which you can download them off the PC's manufacturer's website. Of course since you can't get on the internet try downloading the drivers onto a cd or flash drive from a friend's computer or library. Or if you happen to have the drivers cd or recovery disc that sometimes the manufacturer gives you when you buy the computer, you can do it that way. Any add on card would need drivers reinstalled as well unless it is a plug n play.

Since you're in windows, burn everything you want to keep to CD or DVD if possible.

Download either the CD image or floppy disk image and run this tool: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/technolo/d...

Make sure to run a full, complete scan with it.  If the HDD is hosed, this should let you know.

If the HDD is fine, reinstall windows and delete ALL the partitions and then create a new one.  This would be a complete reinstall from scratch with all previous data gone.

Yeah, ComCast wont see a problem......because it is running as it should be from their side.

Well, sounds like your gonna need another computer with an internet connection, and a usb stick to transfer files back and forth. (which im assuming you have because you got your question on here)

Right Click on the My Computer icon ---> then click on the Hardware tab ----> then go to Device Manager.

Are there an devices......particularly a Network Device that has the Yellow ! exclamation point ?  If so, would mean the driver for your network card is missing...therefore, your network card wont be functional and you wont have an internet connection.

I'm suggesting this because i've done alot of formats on different pc's and this happens quite a bit to me.

If thats the case, your gonna need to know the make and model of your card, then go find a driver installer for it....its the easiest way, u just run it, and it will start working basically.

Oh, and I'd also start to wonder about that HardDrive and how much life its got left in it because of that error you just got.  If you start seeing more odd stuff, start backing up anything you might wanna keep (you should always do this, but.....u might really want to now just in case)

So you've installed Windows XP onto the system and it's working perfectly except for the internet?

Well, if that's the case then, maybe you need to re-install drivers for your modem/router. So make sure you have them, if you got a CD or anything else similar when you purchased your internet that should have drivers. Try and install from there.

Also make sure that your Windows Firewall or anything else similar is blocking you access to the internet.

If your not getting internet but windows is working it does in fact sounds like your network card does not have the correct drivers or none installed at all. Unless your connected to your modem via USB then you have to acquire the drivers from the ISP installation disk. The guys above me except Ben K are all about right. Don't go buying another PC or buying some card. Every thing you have works, its only missing a few things to make them work properly. Question is what is the name brand of your PC? Dell/HP/COMPAQ? If its one of these the driver obtaining process will be simple.

[While installing, it said it couldn't copy a bunch of .dll files. (Dont know if thats good or bad.) ]  That's bad. Since he already tried to re-install windows he is going to have to do it again until its installed correctly. If you have files that wont copy its one of three things

1. Your CD is dirty or scratched

2. Your CD rom has seem better days

3. Hard hard drive might have damaged sectors and wont accept the data.

If it was Me, I'd format the hard drive at this point. If your CD is bad you will need to get a replacement from the computer manufacturer. I am guessing you had a virus in the first place, which when removed left your system32 folder damaged
