It has been itching and grooming itself much more often. He rips out his hair because it itches so much and he has two large bald spots due to it. He also has brown marks, (maybe where he bites himself?) where the bald spots are. He bites himself so hard that he pulls his skin up and rips out hair. Please help! What can this be??

  1. Could be any number of things.  Allergy, heat rash, worms, scabies, fleas or (and pray you're not this unlucky) mange.  Get to a vet.

  2. Being a cat owner for years it sounds like you cat may have some type of mite or allergies. (have you seen any fleas?)Plus, cats are really very dirty creatures even though they might bathe constantly, they have millions of bacterial colonies The bacteria love to live underneath the cuticle that surrounds the claw. I suggest you calling your local vet and asking them this question. This could be something that needs to be treated with some type of a wash or medication. I also had a dog that picked up a skin mite and did the same thing. The vet gave him a iodine bath in which killed the mite. Then again I have a older cat that does nothing but l**k and dig. (nothing is wrong as far as sickness they said she was just a nervous cat.) good luck!

  3. TAKE HIM TO THE VET AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! You don't want him to keep doing this. He may have fleas or ticks or some other skin disease. Good luck!

  4. some sort of flea or nit or something mabe

take you cat to the vets as soon as possible!!!!!

sounds like your pets in pain!

  5. Fleas or skin rash take it ot the Vet immediately.

  6. It sounds like a skin condition or a food allergy???? Contact your vet

  7. It could be allergies or mites or parasites.  Please take him to the vet asap and ask the vet to do a skin scraping to test for these things.

  8. I have seen behavioral anxiety or OCD cause this in cats, fleas, a bacterial or fungal over growth, scabies mites, some topical flea prevention reactions and food allergies all cause this behavior.

Schedule an appointment with your veterianrian. He or she is first going to want to rule out the presence of mites with a skin scrape and a skin infection with a skin cytology. Once he has done those two diagnostics you can discuss possiblities. However there are way too many problems/ diseases that can cause the behavior. The brown marks can be signs of trauma to the area or a change in pigmentation. Unfortunately, if those two diagnositcs don't show anything it will be an approach of trail and error dependant upon clinical history.

    Good luck!

  9. he defo has somethig wrong somethig is itching or bothering him , so would say take him to vets asap as bets his grompy but dnt blame him like having an itch u cant get shot of.

  10. Call your vet - maybe fleas or possibly ringworm.

  11. skin condition, flees, allergy, contact your vet :)

  12. I am  guessing a food allergy and that you are feeding dry food.

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health

Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.

Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrediant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms

The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process.  Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in

Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.    The best food for cats does not contain any grains at all.

Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies  whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food.

Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bp...

    Please read about cat nutrition.

Vetinarian diets  The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza.  http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spring04...

  13. First of all, take your cat to the vet asap! There could be MANY reasons for this...

I could ask you many questions that might help narrow it down... Has anything new, like a new child or pet, been introduced to your home? This could be a result of stress or some kind of psychological issue, it sounds very self-distructive...

Have you used any new products on or around your cat? It could be having an allergic reaction to something, such as a new flea medication or carpet cleaner.

It could also indicate a skin disease like Solar Dermatitus or, more likely, a parasite of somekind.

In any case, it is not normal. So I MUST stress, take the cat to a vet, only a vet can tell you for sure. I hope I helped and I hope your cat will be ok!

  14. Have you been giving him flea drops from the vet, like Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution? Even if he's always indoors fleas can still get inside through you, another pet, or the doors being opened and closed throughout the day. Some animals are very flea sensitive too and just 1 flea can irritate them so badly they do things like that. Your cat may also have bad allergies. Make sure you're feeding them a good quality food like Nutro, Authority, or Purina. These foods will give them vitamins and nutrients they need to be healthy and have good skin. If it's getting to a point where your cat has alot of bald spots that are red and irritated and the skin has been broken from him then you should really see a vet soon.
