he keeps "yelling" but it doesnt sound like in a bad way and he has enough food and water. when i try to give him attention by trying to pet him he flies away and when i try to do it with the cage closed he tries to bite me. he ususally just stays at the food cup and eats. i have had him for about 2 1/2 weeks. he was handfed by a breeder

  1. IS IT A GIRL? OR A BOY?

    if it is a girl........

    it might be pregnant...

    or it needs a companion....

    can u handle it?

    is it tamed?

  2. I used to have several cockatiels. One died through accident, another was bitten by a poisonous spider, Leaving the last one (I had had more, but sold all but 3) alone. Poor thing, he kept 'yelling' for the others and didn't understand where they had gone.

Birds are very social creatures. You have a bird who is used to one home and many other birds around. Now he's in a strange place and can't find his friends. He's all alone. I would recommend going back to that breeder and buying another, preferrablt one of the same bunch your bird came from. He's just lonely and scared.

  3. try feeding him treats in the palm of your hand, this works with mine and they really like cereal. i've had my older male about 3 weeks and he still doesn't want to be handled but my handfed baby loves attention. are his wings clipped? this would make it harder for him to fly away and you could wear a glove when you handle him, mine is less aggressive to the glove than my hand and it doesn't hurt when he bites me. the noise is just part of having a cockatiel and i would worry more if he didn't make a lot of noise.

  4. i have 5 cocktails and its been my experience that some birds are territorial in their cages, others need a while to adjust to a new owner, the best way to give a new bird attention is to walk up to him slowly and talk gently to him.put cage in an area that is well lit away from drafts or dark corners. In front of a window i have found to be to distracting.it took me 3 months for my one bird sunny i did nothing but talk gently to her i use to spend alot of time next to her cage watching tv  eating lunch but always talking to her.then after 3 months i started treating her to millets it took awhile before she accepted them from my hand evautually i would open her cage and put the millet on the arm of my sofa next to her cage and then one day she came out.with alot of patience she started trusting me and now she sits on me and trys to prim me but she still does not like to be touched.to get to go back in her cage i keep saying good girl and very slowly direct her to cage door with my hand down low now when i say good girl she just goes in.I have no dogs or cats in house to upset her some birds get very upset when their is to much going on around them. i also play cocktail tapes for my birds. She could also be lonely,or upset.this is what worked for me but i did not rush her i did everything nice and easy so she did not feel threaten.  I think in time bird breeders are going to have an abundance of birds and like the cat and dog populatuion there will be more birds than homes and they too will be discarded.I feel bad for them because alot of people only have birds to breed and make a profit.there is a bird store not to far from where i live and everytime i go there they have over 100 birds at a time for sale.i go there to buy my birds food.none of my birds are paired up yet they are all next to each other i spend time with each and eveyone of them but i amnot working full time so i can have this pleasure.most of the birds i have acquired were abused or sat in the bottom of the cage scared to death.I have boughten birds that no one in their right mind would want  its been along haul for some but they have been worth it.the sad thing is i know i can't rescue all of them  my one cockateil was in the back room of a pet shop in the dark all alone in a cage i happened to hear it yelling and when i peeked behind the door of petshop the owner yelled and told me that the bird had a deformed foot and he could not seel so i talked him into selling half price for me.God only know how long the bird was back their the water was green with a dead motn init and his newspaper on the bottom of cage was packed with f***s and lice.Got the bird home bathed, dryed and held in a towel it was tramuatized it was scared to death i thought it was going to die it was breathing so hard first day would not eat sat on floor in corner stuck a mirror on outside of cage and bird started eating and watching reflection  most breeders say if you get a mirror a bird will pay more attention to reflection than the owner that is true but in this case it gave bird confidence.they are all individuals. good luck!!
