Question:

Whats wrong with my engine?

I've got a 1970 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland in it. I recently had both the engine and transmission completely rebuilt, yet my engine runs like c**p. Whenever I punch it up a slight incline, it makes a gurgling noise and gets very little power to the wheels. Also, sometimes when I punch it it goes into overdrive and stays there, so I just have really high revs and only go about 45mph. Is this an issue with timing or some other minor adjustment or is it something internally wrong. (I'm pretty sure that these are two separate problems)

  1. your first problem sounds like a fueling issue, specifically that the jets in your carb or even the carb itself are too large for the 351.  Keep in mind that a 600CFM carb can support up to 450ish horsepower, this is one spot where 'bigger isn't better.'  the second problem is definitely a trans one, but I don't think your transmission is slipping into overdrive, because overdrive is intended to DECREASE the engine's RPM.  it sounds more like your clutch packs inside the trans are slipping.

  2. It's a ford they circled the problem on the front of the car
