I can hit 130 yards with my 7 iron and I am pretty good with my 8 and 9 irons and my wedges, but when I it with my 5 iron I usually miss it. I do my same swing with my woods and my driver and I am still missing it. When it actually goes in the air it goes like only 100 yards. Someone help me with what I am doing wrong. I will give 10 points.

  1. I hit my 7 iron about 160 yds.  My 9 iron I can muscle to about 130.  Your swing with wodds are longer and flatter than with your irons.  Irons are more of an up and down.

  2. Toss your 5 iron and get a 23 degree hybrid. More versatile and easier to hit. Once you regain your confidence with the hybrid your driver and other woods will improve. Just a matter of confidence.

  3. There isnt just one thing that you are doing wrong.  Here are a couple of reasons (hypothetically) for why you are struggling with the longer clubs.

    1) They are longer clubs; therefore, longer shafts mean more time to mess up in the swing.

    2) you are moving you head too much, thus allowing your body to get out of sinc.

    3) You practice with the lower irons, but not with the longer irons as well.  You need to use all of your clubs while practicing.  (not necessarily in one day, but all of your clubs should be equally good).

    4) You have a baseball swing in which you do not strike down on the ball.  Instead you try to scoop the ball.  Remember, your weight should be in the middle to front of your stance, never on your heels.

    5) Tee the ball up higher for your driver

    6) Dont let your hips move in front of your hands.  This will cause low shots.  Try to keep your body in sinc

Finally, just keep practicing.  Golf is a difficult hobby, and you are not going to get better if you don't practice.  Its just the way it is.

  4. You've had enough answers and things to think about in the last few answers than your head can handle.  Take it all lightly and relax.

  5. The probable reason is that your swing path is too steep.  Long Irons and Drivers need to have a sweeping motion to make use of the lower lofts of these clubs.

For a self fix I would recommend the "Inside Approach"  you can buy them for about $30 at Target now.  I would recommend lessons however because there could be other swing flaws causing the problem as well.

  6. I have discussed various problems with a various pros. While all the above answers have merit and are possibilities. The golf swing is simple it is only we that make it hard. Without seeing your swing etc I recommend you visit a pro for a few lessons, they are valuable.

The number one reason most pros give for inconsistent shot making for us amateurs is "ball position"

  7. I gave up on the driver.  I cut my clubs down to a 3 wood, 7 wood, 5 hybrid, 9 iron and wedge.  Giving up the big woods and irons actually improved my game and my clubs are a lot lighter to carry.  Its made golf more enjoyable.

You're never gonna be Tiger, you'll be happier when you give up trying!
