I have a Sharp XG-P20XU projector. Just yesterday I noticed a discoloration in the projected picture. At the top of the picture, there is an area shaped like a "V" that is discolored. For example, if the color of the picture showing is supposed to be black, there will be a slightly purple V showing in the middle of the screen. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I purchased the projector used, it has about 320 hrs on the lamp. Its a really bright projector, about 3300 ANSI, so I wasnt sure if this had something to do with it? Or could it be possible that it could just use a good cleaning? Please help. Thanks.

  1. While cleaning is always worth trying, a clogged filter or dirt in the projector is more likely to result in dust blogs or elevated operating temperature and tripped protection circuits than colour changes.

If the projector is still bright it's not likely a lamp issue.

If the picture is still sharp .. without halos or shadows in different colours around objects ... it isn't likely a convergence issue

It sounds like an LCD panel issue. From what I've read organic based LCD panels can start to discolour after long exposure to bright light. That's why modern LCD panels are made with inorganic materials.

You probably need to get an opinion from a service shop that knows Sharp projectors. Maybe a call or e-mail to Sharp technical support?

  2. if its an lcd projector the chip has been slightly burned maybe from leaving a picture paused or a games console paused for some time.it may clear itself or you could try leaving it on a black screen image or bright white image for an hour

  3. I had the exact same problem with an older Epson lcd projector.  I called them and it turned out to the whole lcd assembly would need to be replaced for about $2700.

I ended up replacing the unit for a newer projector for about $3000.

I doubt this will be a cheap or simple fix.  I'll bet your projector had many hours on it before you bought it.
