i have a 9 week old pitbull pup that coughs HARD, like shes trying to cough up something up but nothing comes out (except once, it was mostly gooey saliva). she also has a runny nose .

shes eating and drinking well, hasnt thrown up food . full of energy all day.

i took her to the vet last week she got her 4in1 shots, intranasal, dewormed, stool sample checked, no worms.

i have let her roam the yard, but havent taken her outside yet, while in the yardshe was playing with the hose and got wet, and i thought she might have gotten a cold so i gave her cough syrup for the last 3 days and no effect, i have also boiled her some chicken .and shes still like that.

we have an appointment at the vet in 2 weeks.

what is wrong with her?

  1. It sounds like kennel cough, which is very contagious.  Keep her away from other dogs.  Call your vet and get her in to see him/her as soon as possible.  Your puppy needs antibiotics.  Left untreated, kennel cough can cause permanent damage.

  2. People on here couldn't give you an appropriate answer unless they have a degree in Veterinary Medicine, but if i was you i would wait it out and see if things get worse and maybe in the time that it'll take you to get the vet it'll be all better and you'll save some money.

    Good luckk!

    :)

  3. Hi JR,

Sounds like Kennel cough to me.Call your vet and take her in,she needs help for this.Take her tomorrow don't wait!!!Please do not give her cough syrup for humans this could do more harm that good.

    Your Friend,

  4. have you tried to get some xrays? maybe she has something actually stuck in her throat or something? or it's itchy?

  5. It could be kennel cough. Even though she has had her bordatella she can still get it. Its like a doggie cold. Call your vet tell them it could be kennel cough and the should get you in sooner.

If they still can't get you in call another vet see if they can get you in sooner explain everything and the other vet should call and have your dogs records from your vet faxed over.

If it is kennel cough you might get a medication called clavamox. If I were you I would get your little one into the vet sooner. And please don't give your dog cough syrup unless directed to by your vet because it could be harmful to her.

Good luck and I hope she feels better.

  6. I'm not a vet or anything so I would still advise you to take her but this sound very similar to something my 7 year old dog had. We had moved into a new house and it took us a few months to get organized and landscape the backyard. So, as you can imagine the dog was around a lot of dirt and dust whenever he went outside. He did the exact same thing your describing. He would kinda gag and cough like he was trying to get a hair ball out but nothing came out or saliva would come out. As soon as we took care of the dirt problem, he seemed to be fine. The vet also told us it could be due to so much dirt  or allergies. Hopefully it is something as benign as allergies. Good luck.

P.S. I love pitbulls, they get such a bad rap but all they need is a good master. BTW, my dog is a great dane/ boxer mix.

  7. take her to the vet. simple as that. If she hasn't had borda-tella yet, might wanna get that. she might have eaten something in your house (floor) or grass/fertilizer/chemicals on grass. Don't wait two weeks. If your vet is honest they will only charge a small fee to see her again. At least ask them what is going on over the phone, might be common side effects from the shots.

  8. kennel cough? is a possibility. also there may be somthing wrong in the airway deffinatly need to get that checked out by the vet. maybe just some sinus leakage causing irritation.

  9. Don't give your dog cough syrup...

  10. well ,well,,everyone on here is giving you suggestions,,but the only best thing you can do is call the vet and take your pup in,,and dont wait the two weeks - call them as soon as possable

It could be a wide variety of things or it may be nothing at all

but the only way to know for sure is to take her back to the vets so   they can check her out

  11. she has kennel cough. Have you taken her to the dog park lately or been around other dogs?

you can give her half a child'ss dose of Robitussinn. you need an antibiotic & cougsuppressantnt from your vet. she will be fine just keep her away from other dogs so you don'tnt give it to them.

Also call your vet & have them call you if any earlier openings come up. They can also fit you in as an emergency for probably 10 to 15 dollars more. I owuld ask. That is very uncomfortable on you puppys little lungs & throat!

  12. Maybe your puppy has emphysema.  That could be the reason for the coughing.  Do you smoke a lot when the dog is around?

  13. It sounds like Upper Respritory Infection, but it could also just be something she is getting into. You know how puppies are. Just keep an eye on her, and if she continues to cough, or if her nose becomes overly runny, take her to the vet. Oh yes, STOP GIVING HER COUGH SYRUP! lol. That is intended for human consumption, and a dog's digestive system is different from ours. They can't break down and digest things that we can.

  14. It could be a reaction to the shots, like humans. But my dogs do that when they have a cold. We always give them Children's cough medicine in a syringe, just shoot it right in their mouth, they love it. They vet told us it basically the same thing you would pay $20 for from them. So it's safe.

  15. Some times- just like children- pets can be a bit off after having their shots- the sypmtoms should however only be mild such as runny nose, mild temperature etc. If you are still worried or things get worse go straight to the vet

  16. like cats dogs can have hair balls too because they l**k themselves so its possible that your dog is coughing up hair balls or things stuck in her throat

  17. hate to tell you nothing i ahve 2 poodles and they do that same thing alll the time but noting wrong
